Podtour of Ipswich

A town full of hidden history

Ipswich is often dismissed as a town which was destroyed by the planners in the 1960s. But in fact, it retains much of its interesting history in the back streets and down by the docks.

Take this audio tour and you'll find the remains of Cardinal Wolsey's great college - meant to be as large as his foundation at Christ Church Oxford, but unfinished when he fell from grace. You'll hear about Lord Curzon, who spied for both Henry VIII and Charles V - a Renaissance James Bond who built a huge palace here. His guest quarters still survive in the guise of a second-hand bookshop.

Robert Malster, who narrates this Podtour, is a local historian who is currently working on a maritime history of East Anglia.
