Podtour of St Peter's Basilica
The power of the Church made manifest
Our audio tour of St Peter's has a single hero - Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who made the basilica what it is today. Starting at the Ponte Sant'Angelo, we follow the steps of a seventeenth-century pilgrim to Rome and consider the meanings that Bernini created through his half-century of work on the basilica.
We'll also see Hadrian's mausoleum, now the Castel Sant'Angelo, and the covered way that let Popes escape from an ambattled Vatican into their stronghold. And we'll discover the few pieces of earlier work that were saved from the Old St Peter's to decorate the new basilica - a fine papal tomb, Renaissance bronze doors, and the medieval statue of St Peter.
